Airport Frangible Safety Masts

Fully-compliant with ICAO Aerodrome Design Manual, Part 6 - Frangibility (1st Edition 2006)

  • Low mass composite structure
  • Full-scale impact tested according to Aerodrome Design manual No.6 to verify frangibility
  • Built-in frangibility - no break-away points needed
  • Only low mass components disintegrate at impact thus causing no secondary hazard to the aircraft (e.g. to enter through the windscreen, fuselage, tail surfaces etc.)
  • Transparent to electromagnetic signals
  • Available in all normal heights up to 35 m
  • Easy installation
  • UV-protected
  • Maintenance free
Frangible - adjective : easily broken; breakable; fragile; brittle

Exel Composite Masts Meet The ICAO Frangibility Requirements

Any approach lighting structure required to be frangible should be designed to withstand the static and operational/survival wind loads with a suitable factor of safety but should break, distort or yield readily when subjected to the sudden collision forces of a 3000-kg aircraft airborne and travelling in any direction at 140 km/h (75kt).

The structure must break, distort of yield without imposing maximum force or energy according to the requirements of Aerodrome Design Manual, Part 6.

After a collision, the structure should not become entangled with the aircraft in a manner that will prevent the aircraft from manoeuvring safely either in flight or on the ground. Approach lights and associated wiring supported by the structure should be considered part of the structure for frangibility purposes.
