Design & Rigidity

EXEL masts are built of fibreglass and based on thorough knowledge of composite technology. Glass fibre reinforced composite materials have numerous advantages compared to conventional materials like metals (aluminium). EXEL masts are made according to a special lattice structure and they have many innovative technical details in their construction. Just to name one, there is a patented diagonal-bar joint-bonding method. As a consequence of this structure, the mast is very rigid. Even in strong winds and heavy ice-loads, there will be very limited swaying, twisting or oscillating that could cause the light beams to fluctuate. The construction strength can be altered if the wind speed characteristics at the airport so require.

Weight

EXEL masts have an excellent strength / weight ratio. They are lightweight not only because they are made of glass fibre reinforced composite tubes, but also because of their diagonal multi beam construction. This makes installation work smooth. Also, when a broken lamp has to be changed, it is good to know that the mast can be easily inclined for servicing the light, and when the mast is raised back up it returns to its original position without need to re-align the lights

You can have the lattice masts from a height of 1,5 m up to 15 m, or up to 25 m with a separate tiltable steel pole. The length of the cross bar can be up to 6 m with max. 7 lights.

Service Lifetime vs. Humidity & Temperature

Composite materials are corrosion-free. They are neutral to aggressive environments like humid salty sea winds encountered at airports close to the seashore. Neither do extreme temperatures have any affect. The masts perform equally well in the tropics and the Arctic. There is practically no need for maintenance. EXEL glass fibre masts have excellent fatigue resistance properties because of the ingenious design. EXEL masts are therefore an excellent choice when long service lifetime is needed. There is no need for periodical re-alignment and tightening of screws / nuts that certain types of metal (aluminium) masts require.
